The study was conducted in a hospital's CSSD, focusing on the reduction of cycle times for surgical instrument reprocessing, improving the efficiency of workflows, and minimizing errors to ensure the highest standards of patient safety. The Lean Six Sigma approach targeted waste reduction and process variation, leading to a significant decrease in turnaround time from 4 hours and 30 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Staffing enhancement involved increasing the number of full-time employees by 20%, which significantly reduced overtime hours and improved overall staff morale. Capital investment focused on updating reprocessing equipment, such as washer-disinfectors, autoclaves, and ultrasonic cleaners, to ensure compatibility with newer surgical instruments.
The study also addressed the issue of contamination by monitoring the department's environmental microbiological quality using the ISO 15883 standard. The results showed a reduction in the colony-forming unit (CFU) count from 40 CFUs/m² to below 10 CFUs/m². Additionally, the study identified and eliminated pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, which are known to cause hospital-acquired infections.
