In a pulmonary clinic, a multidisciplinary team conducted an examination to improve sterilization processes for pleuravideoscopes, a specialized medical device used in minimally invasive procedures of the chest. The study, published in Clinical Nurse Specialist in July 2024, focused on enhancing the efficiency and safety of the sterilization process within the hospital's central sterile processing department (CSSD).

The team employed a blend of methodologies, including simulation studies and practical trials, to assess the current sterilization cycles and identify potential areas for improvement. The research found that the existing cycle times were insufficient to completely eliminate Bacillus atrophicus, a bacterium frequently encountered in the CSSD, from the pleuravideoscopes.

To address this issue, the team proposed modifications to the sterilization cycles, including adjustments to the temperature and concentration of the sterilant used. The new cycle settings, when tested on simulated pleuravideoscope samples, demonstrated a significant reduction in Bacillus atrophicus counts, with all test specimens meeting the pass criteria for sterility.

The team also emphasized the importance of adhering to the latest ISO and AAMI guidelines, as well as CDC recommendations for the sterilization of flexible endoscopes, in their proposed enhancements. The study underscores the ongoing need for continuous quality improvement efforts within hospital CSSDs to ensure the safety and efficiency of sterilization processes for specialized medical devices like pleuravideoscopes.
